Peterborough Sailability have welcomed both children and adults since 2006 to the joy and rewards of sailing
Sailing is for Everyone
Sailing is one of the very few sports in which able-bodied and sailors with a disability sailors can participate on equal terms.
Imagine the thrill of sailing for people who can feel and hear but have no sight, or of sailing a boat at speed even though they can’t walk, or of joining in a sport where deafness doesn’t matter.
What you can expect
We can mix & match gentle cruising, hands-on sailing or formal training to suit individual needs, and welcome groups or single participants. Parents and/or carers are welcome to share the experience.
All essential safety equipment including lifejackets and waterproofs are supplied.
Awards & certificates
As an RYA recognised training centre, we develop sailing skills and present achievement awards.
Whats the cost?
Our active season is April to October inclusive. The regular sailing times are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 – 15:00. Cost is £5 per 30-minute sailing session.
Our History
Sailing an ideal sport
Peterborough Sailability was launched in 2006, after our friends at Rutland Sailability suggested that the lake at Ferry Meadows would be very suitable for disabled sailing.
In the beginning
Supported initially by the 6 Rotary clubs in Peterborough, Whittlesey and Oundle, we have grown into a successful operation. In our first summer, we ran just one afternoon a week, with 3 sailing boats and 6 sailors in total.
Queens Award
In 2018 Peterborough Sailability was proudly rewarded with the Queens Award For Voluntary Service, awarded for outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers.
Our fleet of Boats
Challengers (8 boats)
A small, single-seater trimaran dinghy that is unsinkable, self-bailing, won’t capsize and is very stable. Designed specifically to allow those with disabilities to sail and race independently and launched from the slipway. Each sailor will be initially accompanied by a "Buddy" who will help out and provide training.
Hansa Access (3 boats)
Hansa Access Dinghies were designed for people who would love to have a go at sailing, but find it too difficult or uninviting to do so. The dinghy design features allow total novices of any ability to sail with little tuition. Launched from our pontoon with the help of our shore crew volunteers and supported by our Safety boat.
Deben Lugger (3 boats)
The Deben Lugger is an 18’ traditionally styled boat, designed and built using up-to-date technology and materials. This makes it a very safe and stable boat, allowing us to take upto 5 people at the same time.
Comet Trio
The Comet Trio is the ultimate all rounder, designed to be ideal for racing, cruising and training. Our Comet Trio is very versatile and used to train volunteer buddies to achieve required RYA training certificates.
